The Government's Renewable Energy Strategy outlines its plans to reduce carbon emissions by sourcing 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020 and by providing incentives to invest in renewable electricity, heat and transport fuel. Farmers and landowners should be looking to tap into this important sector. Anaerobic digestion and wind power are two forms of renewable energy production that are likely to be used increasingly in the UK. Whilst more familiar forms of energy production, growing oil seed rape for bio diesel, coppicing woodland to provide biomass, will continue to play a role. The huge interest in this area is creating market opportunities and income streams for those willing to get involved.
CLM's experience in this sector of the industry is constantly growing. Our work to date has included identifying and assessing suitable sites for large scale biomass gasifiers (1 to 3MW plants), obtaining planning permission for a biomass boiler to provide heating and hot water to supply a mixed development site and securing grant funding for clients to invest in woodchip supply with funding towards chippers and harvesting equipment.
